Whole-Home Rewiring & Electrical Wiring Replacement

Older, damaged or inadequate wiring can limit what a property safely supports, and it becomes especially relevant during larger renovations.

J.I.C. Electric can evaluate existing wiring and perform appropriate replacement or rewiring as part of residential electrical improvements and remodel projects.

Is this what you need?

What Brought You to Rewiring?

Not every older house needs to be rewired. These are the situations where it genuinely comes up.

The wiring is old

Age matters less than type and condition. What is actually in the walls, and how it has been modified, is the real question.

  • ✓Wiring type and condition assessed where accessible
  • ✓Grounding and device condition reviewed
  • ✓Replacement recommended only where warranted

Year built and any known past work helps.

There is known damage

Rodent damage, water intrusion, heat damage or improvised past work found during other repairs.

  • ✓Extent of damage traced rather than patched around
  • ✓Affected circuits documented
  • ✓Replacement scoped to what is actually damaged

Photos of what was found help scope this.

You are remodeling anyway

The cheapest rewiring happens when the walls are already open for something else.

  • ✓Rewiring scoped with the remodel
  • ✓Access planned around finished areas
  • ✓New circuits and devices updated together

See Remodel Electrical for the broader scope.

There are not enough circuits

Older houses were wired for far fewer loads, so everything shares. That shows up as tripping breakers and extension cords.

  • ✓Existing circuit layout traced
  • ✓New circuits added where they are actually needed
  • ✓Panel capacity assessed with the plan

Note which rooms cause problems.

Recurring electrical problems

Repeated failures in the same area often point at the wiring rather than the devices.

  • ✓Pattern traced across the affected circuits
  • ✓Diagnosis before replacement
  • ✓Partial replacement when that is the honest answer

Troubleshooting & Repairs is the place to start with diagnosis.

Buying or selling the property

Wiring questions come up in transactions, and the answers are worth having in writing.

  • ✓Existing conditions documented in plain language
  • ✓Corrections scoped where issues are identified
  • ✓No formal inspection authority claimed

J.I.C. performs electrical work, not property inspections.

What the service includes

What Rewiring Work Involves

Rewiring is scoped from what is found, and good rewiring is judged partly by how little finish work it destroys.

  • Existing Wiring Evaluation

Wiring type, condition, grounding and past modifications assessed where accessible.

  • Full or Partial Replacement

Whole-home rewiring, or replacement limited to the circuits and areas that actually need it.

  • Circuit Redesign

Circuits laid out for how the house is used now instead of how it was used when it was built.

  • Grounding & Bonding

Grounding and bonding brought current as part of the wiring work.

  • Device Replacement

Outlets, switches and GFCI/AFCI protection updated with the new wiring.

  • Lighting Circuits

Lighting wiring and controls replaced or reworked with the rewiring scope.

    Explore Lighting Installation →
  • Panel Relationship

New circuits landed in equipment that can actually carry them — often a panel replacement in the same project.

    Panel & Service Upgrades →
  • Access Planning

Routing through attics, crawlspaces and open areas to limit unnecessary damage to finishes.

  • Permit & Inspection

Permitted, inspected work with corrections carried through to completion.

Planning considerations

What Makes a Rewire Go Well

The two things owners care about most are disruption and sequence. Both are planning problems.

  1. 1

    Find out what is there

Accessible inspection of wiring type, condition and how the system has been modified over the years.

    First
  2. 2

    Scope honestly

Full rewire, partial rewire or targeted repair — with the reasoning stated rather than assumed.

    Before pricing
  3. 3

    Plan the access

Attic, crawlspace and open-wall routes used first; openings planned and agreed before anything is cut.

    Disruption control
  4. 4

    Sequence with other work

Rewiring lines up with demo and drywall, not against them.

    Schedule
  5. 5

    Update the panel with it

New circuits need somewhere to land, so panel work usually belongs in the same project.

    Capacity
  6. 6

    Document the result

Legible panel schedule and a record of what was replaced and what was left in place.

FAQ

Rewiring Questions

Does my old house need to be rewired?+

Not automatically. It depends on the wiring type, its condition, how it has been modified and what you need it to support. The evaluation comes before the recommendation.

Can a house be rewired without gutting it?+

Often, largely. Attics, crawlspaces and open areas are used first, and necessary openings are planned in advance. Some finish disruption is usually unavoidable.

Can we rewire only part of the house?+

Yes. Partial replacement is common and is sometimes the honest answer.

Do we have to live somewhere else during the work?+

That depends on the scope and the sequence. It is discussed before scheduling rather than discovered mid-project.

Does rewiring include a new panel?+

Frequently, because new circuits need capacity and available spaces. It is scoped and priced explicitly rather than assumed.

Is rewiring permitted work?+

Yes. Rewiring is permitted and inspected, and J.I.C. carries it through inspection.

Wondering Whether Your Wiring Needs Replacing?

Tell us the year built, what you have noticed and whether a remodel is involved. That decides whether this is an evaluation or a project conversation.

  • ✓Evaluation before recommendation
  • ✓Partial replacement when that is the right answer
  • ✓Access and disruption planned in advance
